Direct Assessment
U.S. pipeline integrity management
regulations require that pipelines that could affect
high consequence areas (HCA’s) be assessed
through in-line inspection, pressure testing,
direct assessment, a combination of these or other
equivalent technology. Many pipeline systems are
not piggable and the introduction of water for
pressure testing is not feasible. As an alternative,
the pipeline industry has developed and the regulatory
authorities have accepted a process called direct
assessment for assessing for the threats of external
corrosion, internal corrosion and stress corrosion
cracking. It should be noted that other threats
may also be assessed and determined through these
processes, however, the three mentioned are the
primary intents of direct assessment.
AI IMD offers solutions for supporting
a pipeline company’s direct assessment process.
Software and engineering expertise support the
proper integration of data to determine HCA’s
and assessment regions, integration and classification
of assessment data, prioritization of excavation
sites and engineering of collected data to determine
remaining life and/or re-assessment intervals.
