American Innovations Develops New Vibrating Wire Monitoring Device

AUSTIN, TX – May 2, 2002: American Innovations' Bullhorn APM4VW is an inexpensive means of monitoring vibrating wire (VW) measuring devices like piezometers, which measure pore water pressure in soil and rock, with wireless technology. Piezometers allow engineers to monitor the flow of water through or obtain an estimate of strength and stability of soils and rock. Some of the applications for vibrating wire devices include: determining safe rates of fill or excavation, determining slope stability, monitoring the effects of dewatering systems used for excavations, monitoring vertical drains and sand drains, checking the performance of earth fill dams and embankments, checking containment systems at land fills and tailings dams, and monitoring crack movement.

The APM4VW monitors up to 2 pairs of vibrating wire pressure/strain transducers and thermistor temperature inputs. The two inputs in each pair are a vibrating wire frequency reading (level) and thermistor temperature reading (level correction). Bullhorn's instant notifications by fax, page and/or e-mail inform users immediately when the status of a VW device has reached a pre-programmed alarm situation. If the device is malfunctioning, Bullhorn will let you know before a regulatory event occurs. Your technicians will able to respond quickly and efficiently.

Using Bullhorn to monitor VW devices reduces overhead costs by eliminating expensive and often-unnecessary trips to check equipment status in remote locations. Data from the VW device travels wirelessly to a secure Internet site with a user-friendly interface, so information can be viewed from anywhere you have a web connection. Reliable information about current condition data, including a history of Bullhorn's preprogrammed conditions, is available 24/7. Because Bullhorn uses an inexpensive cellular control channel network to communicate wirelessly and is simple to install and use, it is a low-cost choice for monitoring, even as a backup for other devices already in place.

Using Aeris' MicroBurst™ technology, Bullhorn serves customers throughout North America, including Canada and Mexico. Coverage extends even to isolated swamp areas in the southeast, vast plains in the southwest, remote hill terrains in the east, and distant mountain regions out west. And, with its NEMA 4, hazardous location rated enclosure, Bullhorn is built to withstand the harshest weather and environments.
